World Fair Trade Day

Saturday the 8th of May is the World Fair Trade Day! There will be events and arrangements around the globe.

Fairtrade Norge is arranging the largest event in Norway at Olaf Ryes Plass, Grünerløkka during the day and at BLÅ in the evening. You will have the opportunity to try out Fair Trade products or watch samba show (exciting!).

I will not be able to take part in this event due to daughterly duties. Bohoo!

The Fair Trade movement arose as a reply to the increasing economic gap betwen the North and the South. The point of Fair Trade is to promote sustainable development by offering a fair price rather than a price determined by the market (iow market is unfair) and strengthening living and working conditions in producing countries in the South. The Fair Trade concept has to some degree managed to give poor producers a voice but there is still a long way to go.

You can read more about the Fair Trade here at the Fair Trade Labelling Org. website or here at Wikipedia.

Have a lovely Fair Trade Day! Let me know how it was if you go to Olaf Ryes Plass or BLÅ. I will let you know about my Fair Trade supporting activities when I am am back in town.
